This adventurous tour explores the best of the Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok; as well as a trek to the summit of Mount Rinjani. Our trip is timed to coincide with the Galangun festival; a culturally exciting time to visit the island.
Bali is a fascinating island, with a totally unique form of animist Hinduism. The Balinese year is unique too; with only 210 days in every year. Every Balinese village will have a number of temples, and there are festivals and celebrations happening all of the time. The Balinese are also noted for their religious dancing, and we will be able to enjoy a number of these stunning and photogenic art forms. We will visit a number of ancient palaces and temples as well as a number of villages. As well as the culture, Bali has some incredible landscapes, including rice terraces, dormant volcanos and crater lakes.
The nearby island of Lombok has a completely different atmosphere. It is even more relaxed, and boasts some incredible rice terraces. We will be able to enjoy a trek to the summit of the extinct volcano of Mount Rinjani to photograph sunrise.
Our adventure starts in the cultural centre of Bali, in the town of Ubud. This is an incredible place that has a lot of comforts for tours, but still manages to retain much of its original charm and local culture. There are loads of things to see here, including the famous monkey temple, a number of temples and the Royal Palace.
From our comfortable accomodation we will embark on a series of extensive photography excursions to see the best of this area of the island. On our first day, this includes the rice fields at Gunung Kwai, the Goa Gajah (elephant cave) as well as the spectacular crater and remote villages at the Gunung Batur volcano.
The next day we will mark the Gulangan festival on a walk though rice paddies to see the locals at a nearby village. Bali is noted for it's spectacular terraces, and we will visit some of the best of these at Jatiluwih, as well as some historic Balinese temples, finishing at the coast temple at Tanah Lot.
We will then enjoy a free day, to catch up on post-processing, explore Ubud, or join me on an optional hike up the Mount Batur volcano to witness the sunrise. This is a steep two-hour walk, but the views should be spectacular!
From Ubud we take a winding and scenic drive to Candisa, stopping for varied sight-seeing and photo opportunities. One highlight is the Goa Lawah (bat cave) where thousands of bats hang from the roof of a cave temple.
Our next highlight is the traditional walled village of Tenganan, which we will reach with another atmospheric trek.
From Candisa we take the fast boat to the nearby island of Lombok, where we transfer to the slopes of Mount Rinjani, readying ourselves for an overnight trek to witness the sunrise from the summit of the crater! En route we will pass through a number of villages and be rewarded with tremendous views.
There is an easy alternative for those who don't feel up to the full trek. Please see the itinerary for more details.
After the trek we will be able to explore the highlights of Lombok, before taking a flight back to Bali, just in time for the final day of Galungan, and the temple festival at the historic temple of Sakenan.
Our trip will finish with a farewell dinner and photographing a traditional Kecak dance on the beach.
